ROSES JUST FOR YOU

Autumn falls from a summer blue sky
I've always loved this time of year
But it isn't quite my same old friend
alone without you here

and there's thoughts in my head that must be said
even though they bring the tears
and I'm flooded,
flooded by the memories of all the years

These are the days that you'd celebrate
your birthday all week long
A total sense of empowerment
with your crown and your magic wand

and I'd play along the best I could
bring roses to your room
and I cut the last ones from the garden
late this afternoon, just for you

Those powers that be chose suddenly
and left me here alone
and I know in my head it's better for you
you're not suffering anymore

but my heart is broken open
and something's been removed
I'm feeling lost and double crossed
cause I can't do anything for you

I want to wish you happy birthday
and hold you in my arms
I want to cook you a special dinner
set off the smoke alarms
I want to hear what you say about your day
and see the sparkle in your eyes

that's all I need, that's all I need
to keep this heart alive

Right now all that's left for me
are the memories running through my mind

I've got the roses in your favorite vase
that's the best that I can do
just for you
