ONE DESTINATION

The last time that I saw the man
He didn't understand our conversation
He had gotten old and gray
Disease had taken part of him away,
no compensation
Like a train running out of track
Whistle stops in the distant past
One destination

He would marvel at the sky
and cloud formations flying overhead
in the wind
Sometimes he would reminisce
about a memory in distant past, once again
With the colors of the painting turning gray
and the spirit calling somewhere far away
I had to say

I loved the man who gave me so much time
and always put his family first in line
And though I'm not the kind of man to cry
A tear came to my eye

I recalled my childhood
and all the times I could have spoke my mind
and let him know that things were good
and the feelings that I held for him inside
But I was just a kid and didn't know
That when I'd get the chance to tell him so
I'd never say

And now that he has traveled on
and left us for the great beyond,
my consternation
drives me to my final day
to speak my mind along the way
One destination
