PAUL HE IS A LEAVING

We're saying so long to a fellow inmate
Who's reaching the end of his professional fate
and you know damn well he ain't gonna be late
for his plane when it comes time for boarding
He'll be in that line before the pilot arrives
cause Paul he is a leaving

We all know the politics just drove you nuts
seen your animated railings ‘bout the if's, and's and but's
and that guy in the White House is just a big putz
don't know his brain from his elbow
and like Popeye once said you've had alls yous can stands
and Paul he is a leaving

He sat through long meetings in a fidgety way
and that might just be what drove him away
revisiting subjects again and again
and those contracts and budgets were daunting
and the rules and regulations always won in the end
and Paul he is a leaving

No more supervising and no more end runs
time to relax, enjoy and have fun
soak in the warmth and purge all the stress
that's the whole point of retiring
and the jealous remain to their blackberry's tied
but Paul he is a leaving

He wrote on the white boards all over the land
move more and eat less was his simple command
and I'm sure some awareness was raised as he planned
to help folks reflect on their feelings
but it missed the mark for a skinny guy like me
and Paul he is a leaving

I once heard this man trapped neighborhood cats
that preyed on the birds in the feeders out back
and their poop in the garden was a personal attack
fiendish laugh taking them to the shelter
Maybe Costa Rica is a feline free zone
cause Paul he is a leaving

I can still see him sitting in the old pick-up truck
with his PB&J and the daily news for his lunch
and he'd pass along stories he'd glean from the bunch
bout the poor and the homeless and hungry
and the greedy corruption that made them that way
and Paul he is a leaving

Well don't be surprised if some day down the line
You get a care package from the folks left behind
stuffed full of Adams and Skippy and Jiff
and Smuckers and Girl Scout Cookies
and mushrooms from the woodlands of the Oregon hills
cause Paul he is a leaving

So we're saying farewell, so long and goodbye
Stay clear of the croc's they'll eat you alive
and the boa constrictors will remind you of times
when you worked for the MCHD
but that's all just water gone under the bridge
cause Paul and Julie are leaving
