CAN'T LEAVE THAT FENCEROW

You were sitting there in your easy chair
papers in your lap
I didn't know from which pile they came
or in which pile they went
I just knew that you were working
on fires and such things
to carve us out a living
and make us use our brains

Summertime vacations
gorgeous rivers and the lakes
growing up in the countryside
is something no one fakes
fish on and the tension mounts
the reel starts to sing
I'm coming home for supper ma
and a whopper do I bring

Autumn comes and the fencerows hum
with hunters and the dogs
quail pop up just ahead
the barking bites the fog
and back at home the oak leaves
are dying to be raked
can't leave this fencerow till the rooster
makes his last mistake

We were out there in the freezing rain
with shotguns and decoys
let's go for the experience
we'll leave behind the boys
blinds of straw that left us cold
hiding us from ducks
apparently they stayed at home
and we'd run out of luck

I thank you for the life I've had
and everything you've done
I might not be what you think I could
seemingly on the run
Still I'm really feeling right
and singing is my way
to tell you dad how much I really
think of you each day
